Cleveland State Basketball Set to Host Four-Star Point Guard Markell Johnson

Markell Johnson
Cleveland State basketball will have its highest rated recruit on campus this week since John McLendon brought Julius Erving in for a visit in the 1960's.

Markell Johnson, a four-star 2017 point guard from Cleveland's East Tech High School, will take an unofficial visit to CSU on Friday, he announced on his Twitter account.

According to Johnson, CSU will also host 2017 shooting guard Jarius Ward from Lima Senior High School.

Johnson, who stands 6-foot-1, recently trimmed his list down to five schools, which included CSU.

The other finalists were Ohio State, Louisville, North Carolina State and Virginia Tech.

According to 247Sports composite ratings, Johnson is rated the No. 17 point guard, No. 65 prospect in the country and No. 2 player in Ohio.

Johnson, the Associated Press Division II Player of the Year, averaged 31.2 points a game as a junior, leading the Scarabs to a 21-4 record and a third straight Senate League championship.

He has already taken unofficial visits to OSU (Feb. 28) and Virginia Tech (Feb. 20).

Ward is a 6-foot-1 shooting guard. He averaged 12 points a game last year, helping Lima Senior to a 29-1 record and an appearance in the Division I championship game.

CSU has one player committed for 2017. Garfield Heights shooting guard Shawn Christian committed to the Vikings last week.
